Arsene Wenger plays down reports linking Jonny Evans to Arsenal

Arsene Wenger insists that Arsenal are not close to signing any new players, amid reports linking the Gunners to West Bromwich Albion defender Jonny Evans.

Arsene Wenger has stressed that Arsenal are not close to signing any new players amid reports linking the club to Jonny Evans.

The West Bromwich Albion defender was a rumoured target for Manchester City in the summer and has since been linked with a number of other top-flight clubs, including the Gunners.

A report in The Sun suggested that the Northern Irishman is on the verge of a switch to the Emirates Stadium, but Wenger has denied that such a move is about to take place.

"No, I cannot give you any news on any transfer because we are not close to signing anybody," the Frenchman said in his press conference after Arsenal lost 4-2 at Nottingham Forest in the third round of the FA Cup.

"We signed a Greek boy (Konstantinos Mavropanos) who looks quite good in training but apart from that, we have not done anything. Will we be out there to do something? Yes we will."

Evans, who has made 19 Premier League appearances this term, is under contract at The Hawthorns until the end of next season.
