Borussia Dortmund have confirmed recent newspaper claims that Mats Hummels was eager to join Bayern Munich in the summer.
As the defender approaches the final 12 months of his BVB contract, Bild reported on Tuesday that Hummels had informed club officials of his desire to return to the team where he started his career.
Now, Dortmund have ratified the rumours, although they added that Bayern are yet to lodge an official bid for the 27-year-old's services.
"The player Mats Hummels informed Borussia Dortmund that he wishes to leave the club in order to join FC Bayern Munich with effect from the 2016-2017 season," read an official statement.
"Against this background the management of Borussia Dortmund has decided that the realisation of such a transfer shall depend on the condition that Bayern Munich provides Borussia Dortmund with an extremely valuable offer which reflects the high importance of the player in soccer and other terms for Borussia Dortmund. At present no offer at all has been made by Bayern Munich yet."
In recent years, Robert Lewandowski and Mario Gotze have made the same switch from the Westfalenstadion to Bavaria with varying degrees of success.
