Roberto Martinez focusing on positives following Merseyside derby stalemate

Roberto Martinez admits that Everton need to score more goals if they are to climb up the Premier League, but was pleased with the clean sheet in the draw with Liverpool.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has insisted that he is "extremely satisfied" by this evening's goalless draw against Liverpool, despite seeing his side have just one shot on target at Goodison Park.

The Toffees' solo attempt on Simon Mignolet's net came three minutes from time when Seamus Coleman's angled attempt was pushed away to safety.

However, having seen his side now keep three successive clean sheets in the Premier League, Martinez was keen to focus on the positives from the stalemate.

"We want to get better in every department. It's important to keep clean sheets but in the same manner we want to create and score goals," he told BBC Sport.

"I thought today was an interesting tactical battle on the pitch. We both had our turns in charge of the game. You could see that one goal would do it for either side. I am extremely satisfied with the performance.

"Ross Barkley when he came on gave a really focussed performance We carried a threat all the way through. We were heavily tested from a tactical point of view but we defended extremely well."

Everton remain camped in the bottom half of the table following the draw, sitting five points off Stoke City in 10th place.
