Everton boss Roberto Martinez: We were still in "pre-season mode"

Everton boss Roberto Martinez admits that his side were not up to speed in the first half of their opening-day draw against Watford at Goodison Park.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has conceded that his side were still in "pre-season mode" in their opening-day draw against Watford at Goodison Park.

Miguel Layun fired the Hornets into the lead in the 14th and it took until the second half for the home side to respond through Ross Barkley.

However, Odion Ighalo restored Quique Flores's side's advantage, but the Toffees salvaged a point when Arouna Kone found the net four minutes from time.

Martinez told BBC Sport: "We were in pre-season mode a bit in the first half. Watford shocked us a little bit. We need to make sure we use this transfer window to be stronger."

Everton face Southampton at St Mary's in their next Premier League clash.
