Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders rules Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain out of Thursday's clash with Arsenal but is hopeful that the midfielder's injury is not serious.

Liverpool are hopeful that the injury Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain suffered against Brentford at the weekend is not serious.

The former Arsenal man featured from the first whistle at Anfield and scored his side's second goal against the Bees before being withdrawn in the 74th minute of the contest with a suspected ankle injury.

Oxlade-Chamberlain will miss out on a reunion with the Gunners in Thursday's EFL Cup semi-final second leg, but Pep Lijnders does not expect the midfielder to remain sidelined for long.

Speaking to liverpoolfc.com, Lijnders said: "If we speak about Ox we have to discuss his performance as well. He was outstanding.

"He gives so much to the team because of the variety he can play with because he can play on the eight, he can play on the nine, he can play on the wing and he plays all these positions with a lot of quality. He is in a really good moment so it's a shame that he falls away.

"I spoke yesterday with him and he thinks it's not that bad. We have to assess it day by day. I would not rule out the weekend but for sure not tomorrow."

Liverpool have no further fresh concerns to report ahead of the second leg and have been boosted by the return of Harvey Elliott to full training - four months after the teenager suffered his horrific ankle injury against Leeds United.
