Steven Gerrard names Gary McAllister as his Rangers assistant

New Rangers boss Steven Gerrard confirms that Gary McAllister, who he played alongside at Liverpool, will join the Gers' coaching staff as his assistant manager.

Steven Gerrard has said that Gary McAllister can act as his "rock" after confirming that his former Liverpool teammate will join him as part of Rangers' backroom staff.

The Gers unveiled Gerrard as their new boss on Friday afternoon on a four-year deal starting from June 1 - the former Liverpool and England skipper's first job in senior management.

As expected, the inexperienced coach has turned to Scotland native McAllister - who spent two years on Merseyside in the early 2000s - to guide him during his time at Ibrox.

"He'll be a big rock for me," Gerrard told reporters at his unveiling. "He was very excited when I spoke to him. He has experience of managing. The way he carries himself, I couldn't have asked anyone better to help me. He treats people well."

McAllister has previously had spells in charge of Coventry City and Leeds United, while also spending time as Aston Villa caretaker boss.
