Steven Gerrard says that a failure to finish in the top four this season would be deemed 'unacceptable' as far as former club Liverpool are concerned.

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has insisted that finishing fourth in the Premier League is the the "minimum" that Jurgen Klopp must achieve this season to appease supporters.

The Reds sit third in the top flight ahead of Sunday's big showdown with Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, knowing that victory will put five points between themselves and their fifth-placed opponents.

After stringing together a run of five wins in their last six top-flight outings, though, Gerard claims that Liverpool should not simply settle for another top-four finish for this season to be deemed a success.

"I think [a top-four finish] is the minimum acceptable in terms of what's been spent and the players [Klopp's] got," he told BT Sport. "I think there would be big questions asked if they finished outside the top four.

"I think it's satisfactory, whether that's good enough, as a Liverpool ex-player and a fan, I think you're always searching for more. You want to do better and have longer runs in the cup competitions."

Liverpool are unbeaten in 14 Premier League games at Anfield, winning eight and drawing six of those.
