Manuel Pellegrini baffled by Manchester City display

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini concedes that he has no explanation for his side's capitulation in their 4-1 defeat to Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has conceded that he was baffled by his side's poor display in their 4-1 defeat at the hands of Liverpool.

City relinquished hold of top spot in the Premier League to Leicester City as they were crushed at the Etihad Stadium.

An own goal from Eliaquim Mangala started the rout and strikes from Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Martin Skrtel secured all three points for Jurgen Klopp's men.

Pellegrini told BBC Sport: "Do I understand? No it is impossible. It is difficult to understand, the performance was very low in defending, attacking.

"They scored four and could have had three more, it is impossible to understand. We worked well during the week, I don't believe the way we played.

"We must turn the page, you cannot analyse a performance as low as that. It was a fake game."

City dropped to third in the Premier League as a result of their defeat after being leapfrogged by Leicester and Manchester United on Saturday.
