Michael Carrick: Defeat is "bitterly disappointing"

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick admits that he is "bitterly disappointed" by the team's exit from the Champions League.

Michael Carrick has admitted that Manchester United's Champions League exit is "bitterly disappointing" following their quarter-final defeat to Bayern Munich.

Defending champions came from a goal down to win the tie 4-2 on aggregate, winning 3-1 on the night.

The midfielder told Sky Sports News: "It's bitterly disappointing, we put ourselves in a great position after scoring the first goal. It was a big blow to concede again after 22 seconds, Wayne had a great chance to score again later on and it didn't go for us.

"The high of scoring and conceding is a blow but it is something we had to deal with and we were still well in the game, the second goal was the killer."

The defeat means that United are unlikely to be in the competition next season, as they currently sit seven points off the Champions League places in the Premier League table.
