David de Gea included in Manchester United Champions League squad

Wantaway goalkeeper David de Gea is included in Manchester United's Champions League squad, but there is no place for compatriot Victor Valdes.

Manchester United have named David de Gea in their squad for the upcoming Champions League group stages.

The goalkeeper was heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer, but his proposed switch to Real Madrid broke down in dramatic circumstances when the paperwork was submitted almost half an hour after the Spanish deadline had passed.

He will now remain a Manchester United player until at least January and, despite not having been named in any of Louis van Gaal's squads so far this season, he will be part of the club's first campaign back in the Champions League following a one-year absence.

However, there is no place in the squad for out-of-favour keeper Victor Valdes, with current number one Sergio Romero and Sam Johnstone the other two shot-stoppers chosen by Van Gaal.

Meanwhile, new £36m man Anthony Martial is named as one of four strikers in the squad alongside Memphis Depay, Wayne Rooney and James Wilson.

United qualified for the group stages of this season's competition courtesy of a 7-1 aggregate victory over Club Brugge in the playoffs.
