Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has picked up an ankle injury during England's international friendly against Spain this evening.
The 34-year-old was stretchered off the pitch on 89 minutes after landing awkwardly following an innocuous challenge, with Swansea City man Jonjo Shelvey brought on to replace the veteran playmaker.
Following the game, Carrick left the England dressing room on crutches, leaving manager Roy Hodgson to fear the worst.
"It doesn't look good," Hodgson is quoted as saying by The Mirror. "He's got a severely twisted ankle, which normally means ligament damage. But we wont know until the X-ray or scan tomorrow."
Goals from Mario Gaspar and Santi Cazorla gave the hosts a 2-0 victory in this evening's friendly in Alicante.
