Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has said that his old team should not sign a player just to make a "statement".
United have had bids rejected for Cesc Fabregas, Leighton Baines and Marouane Fellaini this summer, while Thiago Alcantara was heavily linked before joining Bayern Munich.
However, Schmeichel believes that David Moyes should only sign a player if he feels they would significantly improve the squad.
"I would never bring in a player to make a statement," Schmeichel told reporters.
"Maybe with a new manager and a new chief executive they feel a need to tell the fans Manchester United still have the power and money and can still sign the players.
"But the players have to be an improvement. If they are not of the right calibre you stay away from it. You don't sign a player for the sake of it."
The Red Devils face Chelsea at home on Monday night.
