Paul Scholes: 'Manchester United should have kept Robin van Persie'

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes suggests that his old club made a mistake in selling Robin van Persie to Fenerbahce this summer.

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has claimed that the club made a mistake in selling Robin van Persie this summer.

The Dutchman was allowed to leave for Fenerbahce, while fellow frontman Javier Hernandez was sold to Bayer Leverkusen and Adnan Januzaj has been loaned out to Borussia Dortmund.

Anthony Martial has arrived from AS Monaco for £36m, but Scholes says that United are still lacking firepower in the final third.

"They've let three or four strikers go," he told BT Sport. "Now, I think if we had kept one of them, kept a Van Persie or Hernandez then it looks quite strong.

"They can score goals, Van Persie and Hernandez can score goals. Martial could be a real threat coming off the bench. I just think that's a mistake."

United were beaten 2-1 by PSV Eindhoven in their opening Champions League match on Tuesday.
