Team News: Antonio Valencia in at right-back for Manchester United

Antonio Valencia comes in at right-back for Manchester United against Sunderland in Louis van Gaal's only change to the team which beat Southampton last weekend.

Antonio Valencia comes in at right-back for Manchester United against Sunderland in Louis van Gaal's only change to the team that beat Southampton last weekend.

The Ecuadorian, who started in defence in the League Cup win over Ipswich Town in midweek, keeps his place due to the injury absence of Marcos Rojo, with Matteo Darmian switching to left-back.

Michael Carrick returns in the midfield alongside Morgan Schneiderlin at the expense of Ander Herrera, while Memphis Depay and Anthony Martial, who has scored four goals in his last three games, return in attack.

Andreas Pereira is only on the bench despite scoring his first goal for the club against the Tractor Boys in midweek.

For joint-bottom side Sunderland, top scorer Jermain Defoe is fit enough only for a place as a substitute, while Jack Rodwell misses out on the squad altogether with a ankle knock picked up in the League Cup defeat to Manchester City.

Fabio Borini leads the attack on his own as Lee Cattermole and Adam Johnson return to the starting XI, and there is also a place for captain John O'Shea against his former club.

Manchester United: De Gea; Valencia, Smalling, Blind, Darmian; Schneiderlin, Carrick; Mata, Rooney, Memphis; Martial.
Subs: Romero, Jones, Herrera, Schweinsteiger, Pereira, Young, Fellaini

Sunderland: Pantilimon; Jones, van Aanholt, O'Shea, Kaboul; Cattermole, M'Vila; Johnson, Toivonen, Lens; Borini.
Subs: Mannone, Larsson, Gomez, Defoe, Coates, Yedlin, Fletcher
