Lille attacker Angel Gomes admits that he would 'find it difficult to say no' to a return to Manchester United if the Red Devils made a move for him.

Angel Gomes has admitted that he would 'find it difficult to say no' to a return to Manchester United amid claims that the Red Devils are interested in re-signing him.

The 24-year-old came through the youth system at Man United, representing the club between 2006 and 2020, but he was restricted to just 10 appearances at first-team level.

Gomes left for Lille in 2020, and he has developed into an important player for the French outfit, scoring nine goals and registering 19 assists in 123 appearances for the club in all competitions.

The attacker was brought into the England squad last month, and he made two appearances for the national team against Republic of Ireland and Finland, playing the full 90 minutes against the latter.

Man United are believed to be closely tracking their former academy player, with a return to Old Trafford in the near future believed to be a possibility.

Gomes opens door to spectacular Man United return

Gomes' contract with Lille is due to expire at the end of the season, and a number of clubs are said to be keeping a close eye on his situation with a view to a move in January.

The attacker has admitted that he would find it tough to reject the chance to return to Man United.

"There'll always be that sentimental soft spot, so of course it'd be difficult to say no," he told The Times. "As amazing as it would be, after finding happiness abroad I know [playing in the Premier League] is not the be-all and end-all."

Gomes has again been an important player for Lille during the 2024-25 campaign, making nine appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and registering one assist in the process.

Should Man United move for Gomes?

The Englishman plays his best football in the number 10 position, but it is difficult to see him receiving much action in that area due to the presence of a certain Bruno Fernandes.

The Red Devils captain has had an indifferent start to the season, picking up red cards in his last two matches, but he remains a key player for the 20-time English champions and signed a new deal over the summer.

Gomes has played as a central midfielder this season, but it is tough to imagine him operating in that area on a consistent basis due to the nature of Premier League football.

On a free transfer, though, he could be an inspired signing, as he has certainly grown as a player since first leaving Old Trafford.

Gomes has again been named in the England squad by interim head coach Lee Carsley, and he will be hoping for more opportunities to impress against Greece and Finland in the UEFA Nations League.
