FIFA Honorary President Joao Havelange has been admitted to hospital "with a severe infection" according to a recent hospital statement.
The 95-year-old was admitted to the Hospital Samaritano in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday evening and has begun a course of treatment, according to reports.
The statement read: "Joao Havelange was admitted last night at the Hospital Samaritano, in Rio de Janeiro's Southern area of Botafogo, with a severe infection.
"He is in a serious condition and requires medical care. There is no estimation about when he may be discharged. The medical team which is following him will release a new statement in 24 hours."
Havelange was the seventh President of FIFA, serving between 1974 and 1998. He received the title of Honorary President upon leaving office.
