Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher feels that no penalties should have been awarded in Saturday's fixture between Nottingham Forest and Brentford.

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has dismissed the suggestion that there could have been four penalties during the fixture between Nottingham Forest and Brentford.

The encounter at the City Ground ended in a 2-2 draw with a last-gasp own goal from Brentford's Matias Jorgensen earning Forest a share of the spoils.

However, after the game, Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White claimed that his side had been "cheated" out of three points, a consequence of four penalty decisions going against them.

Towards the end of the first half, Forest goalkeeper Dean Henderson was adjudged to have brought down Yoane Wissa inside the area, the referee waving away Brentford's appeals until being instructed to go over to the monitor.

At the other end, Forest had three appeals of their own turned down with Emmanuel Dennis, Ryan Yates and Gibbs-White all being felled after varying amounts of contact.

While Gallagher feels that Forest had reason to feel aggrieved about the decision to award Brentford a spot kick via VAR, he played down their calls for a penalty regarding the three other incidents.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, Gallagher said of the penalty that Brentford were awarded: "No. I think if you look at Wissa, his feet are off the ground. There is minimal contact, and there's a higher bar, a higher threshold, this season.

"I think the referee called it right on the field. He was sent to the monitor, I think unnecessarily so."

When assessing the footage of Dennis going down under a challenge from Matias Jensen, Gallagher revealed that he did not expect any of the coming-togethers to result in a penalty.

"I don't think that is a penalty either. If you look at them, there were four shouts and it is more acceptable to turn all four down."

However, Gallagher acknowledged that Gibbs-White may have perhaps been unfortunate not to win a penalty as he attempted to move past a Brentford defender on the byline.

"I think this is probably the strongest appeal of the lot, but I think that he cannons into the player and his feet are off the ground, like with the Wissa one."

As a result of the dramatic four-goal thriller ending on level terms, Brentford now sit in 11th spot in the standings and Forest remain in bottom place.
