Sunderland looked dangerous early on, with Danny Graham being denied by Tim Howard following a passing move from the hosts.
Everton struggled to create chances in the first half but Kevin Mirallas wasn't far away from handing the Toffees the lead with a deflected effort.

Sunderland took the lead in super style shortly before the break, with Sessegnon punishing Leighton Baines for an error by drilling the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.
Danny Rose's tenacity nearly produced a second goal just after the interval but the on-loan defender struck wide following an impressive run on the left side of midfield.
Everton were almost level when Marouane Fellaini's effort struck the leg of Nikica Jelavic, but Simon Mignolet adjusted well to keep the ball out.
The Sunderland supporters had to nervously wait for confirmation of the win but Paolo Di Canio's side secured the victory despite Everton having a late appeal for a penalty rejected.
