Villarreal edge past Almeria

Villarreal score at the start and end of their match against Almeria to secure a 2-0 win in La Liga.

Villarreal have secured a 2-0 win against Almeria this afternoon in their La Liga clash.

The home side took the lead in the third minute when Ikechukwu Uche found some space inside the box to lash the ball home inside the right post.

Moises Gomez then beat two defenders, but fired over the bar with a powerful shot. Almeria struggled to get in the game and Jonathan Zongo was wasteful with an effort that sailed wide of the post.

Mateo Musacchio and Bruno Soriano missed decent opportunities as Villarreal continued to have the better of the play.

The visitors came out strongly in the second half, as Verza fired in a shot that Sergio Asenjo saved. Helder Barbosa then rose highest to meet a header, but a defender did well to clear.

Suso and Ramon Azeez also missed from long range as Almeria continued to search for an equaliser. Asenjo then had to push away another Suso effort.

The same player threatened again, blasting a shot from the edge of the box that Asenjo somehow got away to safety. However, Soriano converted a late penalty to secure the win for the home side.
