Warren Gatland believes that Wales can triumph over the Springboks in the World Cup groups stage.

Warren Gatland is hoping to cause a major upset when Wales take on South Africa in the group stages of the Rugby World Cup.

The Wales coach recognises the challenge posed by the Boks, but insists that taking them on in the opening stages of the tournament could be key to Wales’s chances.

"It is hugely positive for us to have South Africa first up. We have Wayne Barnes refereeing and he is one of the best in the world," he said.

"I would not want to be playing them last as a decider with referees having quarter-finals to think about - they are under as much pressure to perform as players."

Despite not beating the Springboks since 1999 in Cardiff, Gatland believes that Wales can win if confidence is high.

"We have pushed South Africa close in recent encounters and it is about getting over the line. We know it will be tough and we have to go there with confidence, putting out our best side to get a performance and a victory."

Wales face South Africa on Sunday, September 11.
