Anne Keothavong fell at the first hurdle of the US Open this evening.
The Brit struggled to gain any rhythm throughout her contest with world number six Angelique Kerber.
Germany's Kerber took control of the match early on and with the scores level at two games apiece, she won the next four games on offer to take the first set 6-2.
The second set proved even more difficult for Keothavong, who found herself 4-0 down with 15 minutes.
Kerber refused to let up in the closing stages and she eventually broke for a bagel 6-0 success to book her place in the next round.
She will now take on Bethanie Mattek-Sands or Venus Williams for a place in round three at Flushing Meadows.
