Steven Gerrard: 'Aaron Ramsey should be embarrassed by Edinson Cavani incident'

Steven Gerrard says that Aaron Ramsey should be "embarrassed" after holding his face following an altercation with Edinson Cavani in Arsenal's clash against PSG.

Steven Gerrard has claimed that Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey should be "embarrassed" by his altercation with Edinson Cavani during Wednesday night's Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain.

In the seconds after the Gunners were awarded a penalty on the stroke of half time, Cavani tried to delay the spot kick by holding on to the ball.

After Ramsey punched the ball out of Cavani's hands, the Uruguayan striker shoved his opponent in the chest, grazing the Welshman's chin in the process.

In response, Ramsey tried to attract the referee's attention by holding his face, but Cavani escaped punishment and the game went on to finish 2-2 at the Emirates.

Giving his reaction to the altercation during a punditry stint on BT Sport, Gerrard said: "I think [Ramsey] should be a little embarrassed by that. I thought the Welsh are meant to be tough."

Rio Ferdinand, who was also on the TV panel, added: "I think there was a bit of over-reacting from Ramsey. I think if he was a foreign player we'd be going mad."

After the match, Ramsey spoke about the incident, telling the club's official website: "Those things happen on the football pitch, but it's fine, we shook hands at the end and it's nothing."

The result of the game means that Arsenal need to beat Basel in a fortnight in order to finish at the top of Group A.
