Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis reportedly favours appointing Mikel Arteta as a replacement for outgoing manager Arsene Wenger.

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis has reportedly indicated that he rates Mikel Arteta as a strong candidate to replace Arsene Wenger.

On Friday, Wenger announced that he would step down as Gunners boss at the end of the season, and a number of potential replacements have since been reported.

Former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique is said to be high on the shortlist but according to Sky Sports News, Arteta is also in the running for the position.

The Spaniard spent the last five years of his playing career at the Emirates Stadium, with 16 goals being scored in 149 appearances in all competitions.

The 36-year-old now works on the backroom staff at Manchester City, where he has just assisted Pep Guardiola in guiding the North-West giants to the Premier League title.
