Result: Blackburn Rovers 4-3 Newcastle United

Centre-back Gael Givet scores deep into extra-time to send Blackburn Rovers through to the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup.

Centre-back Gael Givet struck in the last minute of stoppage time in extra time to send Steve Kean's Blackburn Rovers into the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup tonight.

It looked as though goals from Ruben Rochina and Yakubu had let Rovers progress through in normal time, but stoppage-time strikes from Danny Guthrie and Yohan Cabaye sent the tie into extra time.

Morten Gamst Pedersen restored the home side's winning advantage in extra-time with a free kick from 35 yards, but the visiting Magpies replied once again courtesy of a penalty from Peter Lovenkrands.

Deep into the extra 30 minutes Pedersen lofted the ball inside the area, which Christopher Samba headed beyond the reach of Tim Krul in goal for Givet to score from two yards out.
