Burton Albion knock out Bolton Wanderers with Matthew Palmer strike

Burton Albion advance to the next round of the Capital One Cup at the expense of Championship side Bolton Wanderers as Matthew Palmer fires them to a 1-0 win.

Matthew Palmer has scored a late winner to send League One outfit Burton Albion into the second round of the Capital One Cup courtesy of a 1-0 victory over Championship side Bolton Wanderers.

Zach Clough was the first player to register a shot at goal as he weaved his way past two Burton defenders before curling an effort towards the net, but it was saved with ease by Remi Matthews.

Clough went close again for the home side when his free kick from 25 yards took a deflection, but the ball sailed narrowly over the crossbar with Matthews beaten.

The Trotters should have taken the lead when Liam Feeney's free kick from outside the box was parried straight into the path of Gary Madine two yards from goal, but he could only guide his header onto the crossbar.

Madine went close again just before the break when he latched on to another Feeney set piece, but his header went wide of the post

In the second half, the Trotters again failed to find the net as Feeney broke free down the middle, only to be denied by an impressive stop from Matthews.

Neil Danns and Mark Davies combined in the midfield to carve out an opening for Madine, but once again he was unable to find a way past Matthews.

Substitute Stephen Dobbie almost made an impact as his pinpoint delivery from a free kick found the head of Dorian Dervite, but his header was saved by Matthews.

Matthews was single-handedly keeping the home side at bay and his impressive display continued as he made a fine stop to deny Feeney at his near post.

Burton secured their place in the next round of the competition in the 87th minute when Palmer fired at goal from the edge of the box and his strike deflected off Dervite to wrong foot Ben Amos and find the net.
