Roy Hodgson: 'Injured Callum Wilson was under consideration for England call'

Roy Hodgson says that crocked Bournemouth star Callum Wilson might have been named in his most recent England squad if not for his "tragic" knee injury.

England coach Roy Hodgson has revealed that Bournemouth hitman Callum Wilson was under consideration for a call-up prior to his "tragic" injury.

The 23-year-old had netted five Premier League goals for the top-flight new boys, but a knee injury in last week's 2-1 defeat at Stoke City will see him miss most of the 2015-16 season.

With the Three Lions already qualified for Euro 2016, Hodgson ushered a host of new young faces into the international fold for their final qualifiers with Estonia and Lithuania next week.

"He's been bloody unlucky," the 68-year-old is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News. "He was on the radar.

"He has already played for the U21s so we know about him but he obviously came under consideration after his excellent start this season. I am very disappointed by the injury.

"I can't say he would have necessarily been in the squad because I am happy with the players we have got, but we think Callum has a lot of ability and lots of qualities and he is one that we certainly would have continued to follow quite closely. But now I have to wait a few months because of his tragic injury."

It was confirmed during the week that Wilson would miss a minimum of six months.
