Graham Potter defends Mykhaylo Mudryk's lack of game time at Chelsea

Chelsea head coach Graham Potter defends his decision to hand £88m signing Mykhaylo Mudryk minimal game time in recent weeks.

Head coach Graham Potter has suggested that Mykhaylo Mudryk will soon be in a position where he can showcase his ability at Chelsea.

During the January transfer window, the Blues hierarchy were persistent with their efforts to sign the winger from Shakhtar Donetsk, eventually sealing an £88m deal.

However, while Mudryk initially burst onto the scene with an encouraging debut as a substitute at Liverpool on January 21, he has failed to replicate that level of threat during the appearances that have followed.

The 22-year-old started the fixtures against Fulham, West Ham United and first leg versus Borussia Dortmund, not completing more than 71 minutes in either match.

More recently, Mudryk has been limited to just 33 minutes of football since February 18, remaining as an unused substitute during the victories over Leeds United and Dortmund in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Given the attention that the player's transfer attracted in January, there is naturally focus on Mudryk's every move at Stamford Bridge.

Nevertheless, Potter has defended the amount of action that the Ukraine international has received, while also hinting that he could feature at Leicester City on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference, the Englishman said: "He comes into the equation. He is a player we believe in a lot.

"When he arrived, he was in the middle of a pre-season campaign, so to hit the ground running in the Premier League is not so easy to do.

"But day-by-day, week-by-week he is getting stronger and stronger, so he'll be in the squad tomorrow and there's a chance he could play."

Mudryk's chances of playing against the Foxes are boosted by Raheem Sterling, who started versus Dortmund on Tuesday night, missing out with a minor hamstring injury.

Noni Madueke, a fellow January arrival, comes back into the picture, though, having been ineligible to participate versus the Bundesliga giants.

Joao Felix has featured on the left flank in recent games, but the Portuguese attacker is able to be deployed in any role in the final third.

Christian Pulisic joins Mudryk and Madueke in fighting for a starting spot after making his return from a knee injury earlier this week.
