Gary Cahill's strike has earned Bolton Wanderers an important 2-1 win against Everton at Goodison Park.

Denis Stracqualursi had two early chances for the hosts, but his poor finishing kept the scores level.

Everton created the better chances in the first half, with Louis Saha and Leon Osman both firing wide from 15 yards.

Bolton's best chance of the half came when Chris Eagles's cross was nearly put into his own net by Phil Jagielka.

The defender came off injured soon after when he stopped David Ngog from giving the visitors the lead.

Everton went ahead after the break in bizarre circumstances as goalkeeper Tim Howard's clearance was swept by the strong winds past his opposite number Adam Bogdan.

Bolton were level soon after when Ngog collected the loose ball before curling in a left-footed shot.

Owen Coyle's side grabbed the win ten minutes later as Gary Cahill fired across Howard from ten yards.

The victory has moved Bolton to within a point of safety, while Everton stay 11th.
