Huddersfield Town confirm appointment of new head coach David Wagner

Huddersfield Town confirm the appointment of David Wagner as the Championship club's new head coach.

Huddersfield Town have confirmed the appointment of David Wagner as the club's new head coach, 24 hours after they sacked Chris Powell.

Wagner, who worked as Jurgen Klopp's assistant at Borussia Dortmund, has secured his first job as a full-time senior manager.

The 44-year-old was rumoured to be considering a move to Klopp's backroom team at Liverpool, but it has been confirmed by Huddersfield that the former USA international has joined them as head coach.

The Terriers will be coached by academy manager Mark Lillis for Saturday's match against Leeds United, but Wagner will watch the game from the stands at John Smith's Stadium before taking full-time charge on Monday.

Huddersfield chairman Dean Hoyle told the club's official website: "David's football philosophy is directly in line with that of the club - he fits for what we need. It is new departure for us. He will be head coach - he is the club's first from outside the UK and Ireland and he brings a new approach and new ideas.

"In his own words, and as we hope will be seen in practise, his playing style echoes the one that has brought Borussia Dortmund such success over the last five years. Although the players are different, there are few fans who have watched that style in action and not found it enthralling to watch. I believe that will excite our fans.

"He knows what it takes to prepare young footballers for the rigours of senior football. Perhaps most importantly, he has trust in young players, which it attractive to us. When we spoke with David, his knowledge of our squad was impressive and he already has firm ideas of where he wants to develop it going forward. He is very passionate and totally committed. He lives and breathes football and that fits the club."

Wagner will be joined by his assistant boss Christoph Buhler, with whom he worked during a four-year spell in charge of Dortmund's reserves.
