Leeds United confirm departure of Steve Evans as head coach

Leeds United confirm the departure of Steve Evans as head coach following a seven-month spell.

Leeds United have confirmed that they have parted company with head coach Steve Evans following a seven-month spell.

The writing has been on the wall for Evans for some time given that club owner Massimo Cellino has been interviewing potential replacements in the last few weeks.

MK Dons manager Karl Robinson and Bristol Rovers boss Darrell Clarke have already turned down the job, and now former Swansea City coach Garry Monk has become the odds-on favourite to take over at Elland Road.

Evans was appointed in October last year and managed to keep the club in the Championship by guiding them to 13th position.

Cellino told the club's official website: "I would like to thank Steve Evans for his efforts as the head coach of Leeds United. Steve completed the job he was brought in to carry out - to keep the team in the Championship - and his hard work here has been greatly appreciated. I wish him and Paul Raynor the very best for the future.

"We have, however, decided that a different approach is required in order to achieve our targets for the new season. The club is now looking to appoint a new head coach to build on the good work of Steve and Paul and deliver the special season which our supporters deserve."

Leeds have sacked six managers in two years.
