Jose Mourinho aims subtle dig at Manchester United supporters

Jose Mourinho says that he hopes supporters enjoy Tuesday's European tie with Benfica more than they did Saturday's 1-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in a thinly-veiled dig.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has aimed a subtle dig at his own supporters ahead of Tuesday night's Champions League meeting with Benfica at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese hit out at the Red Devils faithful at the weekend after his decision to replace Marcus Rashford with eventual matchwinner Anthony Martial against Tottenham Hotspur was met by audible jeers.

Mourinho admitted that he was "disappointed" by the reaction from fans, particularly those who did not offer out-of-form striker Romelu Lukaku the support he deserved over the 90 minutes.

In an apparent fresh swipe at those in attendance at the Theatre of Dreams, the 54-year-old wrote in matchday programme United Review: "I hope that you enjoy the game more than some of you did against Tottenham.

"It was an extremely tight game between two big teams, but I think we got what we deserved for our efforts. They gave absolutely everything, so even if we hadn't won, then I would have been proud of them."

United had failed to win their previous two league games prior to Saturday's late 1-0 victory over Spurs, which kept them within five points of leaders Manchester City.
