Erik ten Hag will receive a £3m bonus if he is able to lead Manchester United back into the Champions League for the 2023-24 campaign, according to a report.

Erik ten Hag will reportedly receive a £3m bonus if he is able to lead Manchester United back into the Champions League for the 2023-24 campaign.

The Red Devils finished sixth in the table last season, meaning that they will play in the Europa League this term rather than the leading competition in European club football.

Ten Hag's main task for the 2022-23 season is to secure a top-four spot in the Premier League table, and according to The Sun, the Dutchman would receive a £3m bonus if he is able to lead the club back into the European Cup for the 2023-24 campaign.

The report claims that the 52-year-old's £9m-a-year salary is only half what Pep Guardiola is on at Manchester City, but the deal includes a number of incentives.

Failure to secure a spot in next season's Champions League would allegedly cost Man United as much as £90m in sponsorship deals, television revenue, prize money and gate receipts.

Man United have made three new signings during this summer's transfer window, bringing in Tyrell Malacia, Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez.

The club are still believed to be keen to sign Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong and Ajax's Antony, while a new goalkeeper is likely to arrive following Dean Henderson's loan exit to Nottingham Forest.

The future of Cristiano Ronaldo remains unclear, though, with the Portugal international still thought to be pushing to leave the 20-time English champions before the end of the market.

Man United have now returned to Manchester following their pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia, which saw them beat Liverpool, Melbourne Victory and Crystal Palace, in addition to drawing with Aston Villa.

The players are expected to be back in training on Tuesday, with the team preparing their final two friendlies of the summer against Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano this weekend.

Man United will then begin their 2022-23 Premier League campaign at home to Brighton & Hove Albion on August 7, and it is still unclear whether Ronaldo will take part in that fixture.

Ten Hag was critical of his side at the weekend for their two-goal collapse against Villa, with Steven Gerrard's team recovering from two goals behind to draw with the Red Devils in Perth.

"Football is a sport of mistakes and we have to decrease the mistakes. That's clear but I have seen a lot of progress in these two weeks," the Daily Mail quoted the Dutchman as saying.

"In the first half I saw really good football, really controlling and dominating the game but we have to learn from what happened in the second half. It's not possible that you go 2-0 and then throw it away.

"A drop of focus is unacceptable. We have to get out of the dressing room and back in your plan and your focus and back to your performance and that is what we didn't do."

New signing Eriksen is now in Manchester and is expected to train with his new teammates on Tuesday with the view to being involved against either Atletico or Rayo this weekend.
