Sir Alex Ferguson apologises to Newcastle United for calling them a "wee club" over the festive period.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has apologised to Newcastle United for calling them a "wee club".

The Scot made the claim following his side's fiery 4-3 win over the Magpies on Boxing Day.

"It was never my intention to belittle Newcastle fans," Ferguson told the Mail on Sunday.

"I want to clear up any misunderstanding that may have arisen over what I said. I have nothing but the highest regard for Newcastle fans and I always have had.

"They are up there with the best supporters in the game."

Premier League leaders Manchester United return to action next Sunday when they welcome Liverpool to Old Trafford.
