Martin Keown backs Wayne Rooney for England captaincy

Former England defender Martin Keown believes that Wayne Rooney is the right man to be appointed the next captain of the national team.

Former England defender Martin Keown has backed Wayne Rooney to become the next captain of the national team.

The Three Lions are currently without a skipper following Steven Gerrard's recent decision to step away from international football.

With a number of names already being linked with the role, Keown believes that Manchester United striker Rooney has the right attributes to lead Roy Hodgson's side.

"I like to look at who's the best player and which player has the right characteristics. It's difficult to look beyond Wayne Rooney," he told Sports Mole.

"He might well be the captain for Manchester United [this season]. I think he's matured. We've got to be careful that we don't put too much pressure on him, but Steven Gerrard thrived on that pressure. It could even make Rooney a better player."

Rooney has scored 40 goals in 95 appearances for England.
