Matt Le Tissier: FA punishments "inconsistent" following spitting row

Matt Le Tissier claims that the FA is inconsistent with its punishments following the bans of Papiss Cisse and Jonny Evans.

Matt Le Tissier has claimed that the Football Association is unsure of its own punishment policy following the bans of Papiss Cisse and Jonny Evans.

Newcastle United's Cisse was banned for seven games and Manchester United's Evans for six, after the pair clashed in their Premier League match on Wednesday.

Le Tissier believes that the length of punishments handed out by the FA are inconsistent, and calls for clarity after Diego Costa's stamp received a three-match ban and Miles Jedinak's elbow resulted in a four-game ban.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, Le Tissier said: "It appears that the FA are confused. I'm sure they have got rules in place when all the controversial incidents come up but it does seem some incidents are getting far harsher punishments than others.

"They need to sit down and say 'this is the punishment for this' and 'this is the punishment for that'. So, everybody knows at the start of the season if you do that offence, you know what is coming because at the moment it doesn't seem as that is the case."

The former Southampton striker added that video technology would aid referees in their efforts during matches.
