Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku 'might not trust the players he is playing with', according to former Arsenal forward Paul Merson.

Former Arsenal forward Paul Merson has suggested that struggling Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku 'might not trust the players he is playing with'.

Lukaku has scored four times for United this season but is without a goal in his last eight appearances at club level and has been criticised amid the team's poor run of form.

Merson has defended the 25-year-old, however, and claimed that the Belgium international is not being helped by his teammates.

"Lukaku went to Manchester United to score bundles of goals and get bundles of chances. He's playing in a team at the moment, up front, on his own, that are playing like a bottom-half team... a relegation team," Merson told Sky Sports News. "He should be getting seven chances a game at Old Trafford. Does he trust the players he's playing with?"

Lukaku has managed 31 goals in 64 appearances for United since a move from Everton in the summer of 2017. The striker will once again be in the starting XI for Sunday's Premier League clash with the Toffees at Old Trafford.
