Paul Scholes says that Manchester United should attempt to appoint Chelsea's Thomas Tuchel or Tottenham Hotspur's Antonio Conte as their new head coach.

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has said that the Red Devils should attempt to appoint Thomas Tuchel or Antonio Conte as their new head coach.

Paris Saint-Germain's Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax's Erik ten Hag are believed to be the two favourites to become the club's new permanent manager, with Ralf Rangnick set to step aside at the end of the season.

However, Tuchel has also allegedly been added to the club's shortlist due to the uncertainty surrounding Chelsea, with the Blues facing a number of off-the-field concerns.

Conte, meanwhile, only joined Tottenham Hotspur last November, but the Italian is also being linked with a move away from the North London club.

"I would have gone for Conte or Tuchel now," Scholes told BT Sport. "Possibly it looks like he [Tuchel] might be available at the end of the year. Those two are top class elite coaches who I think strike fear into players and win which is the most important thing.

"United with either one of those coaches would be a much better squad. Okay, they need additions. But I hate it when people say they need four or five players or need to spend £200m or whatever it is. There is a group of players here that I think can be made a lot better by top quality elite coaches."

Man United were knocked out of the Champions League in the round of 16 on Tuesday evening courtesy of a 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their tie.
