Manchester United to land Kostas Manolas for cut-price fee?

Manchester United target Kostas Manolas could be available for a cut-price fee this summer should Roma - currently fifth in Serie A - miss out on a Champions League spot.

Manchester United could reportedly sign Kostas Manolas for a cut-price fee this summer should Roma fail to qualify for next season's Champions League.

United have been in the market for a new central defender during the past two transfer windows, with the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly, Toby Alderweireld and Manolas understood to be at the top of their list of potential targets.

Koulibaly is likely to command a world-record transfer fee, but Alderweireld's expiring contract makes him available on the cheap and Calciomercato claims that Manolas could also be a cut-price option.

The 27-year-old would be eager to leave the Italian outfit should they fail to finish in the top four this season, and a release clause in his contract means that he would be available for just €36m (£30.8m) should that be the case.

Roma currently sit fifth in the Serie A table, four points adrift of AC Milan in fourth and only two points above Lazio having played a game more than their city rivals.

However, Manolas's desire to play Champions League football next season would also mean that United must qualify for the top-tier European competition if they are to prise the Greece international away from the Stadio Olimpico.

Arsenal, Juventus and Bayern Munich have also previously been credited with an interest in the defender.
