Steve McClaren: 'Newcastle United have answered critics'

Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren believes that his side has "answered the critics" by coming from behind to beat Tottenham Hotspur.

Steve McClaren has said that his side "answered the critics" in their come-from-behind win over Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

Ayoze Perez netted the winner at White Hart Lane in stoppage time after Aleksandar Mitrovic cancelled out Eric Dier's first-half goal.

"It was a big test, especially being 1-0 down at half time. It's answered the critics we have had over last four weeks and it was a great performance in the second half and a great result," BBC Sport quotes the manager as saying.

"That is what we are, a bedrock of discipline and hard work. We have talented players, and they know how to win, we just have to do it consistently.

"[The goals from the subs] are nothing to do with my decision, it's down to the players on the pitch, they have to impact. We asked them to win the game and that's what they did. We haven't turned the corner yet, we need more performances like that. We have been inconsistent."

The result lifts Newcastle out of the relegation zone, moving the team up to 15th.
