Matjaz Kek quits as coach of Slovenia after failing to guide them to Euro 2012 qualification.

Matjaz Kek has quit as coach of the Slovenian national team after four years at the helm.

The 50-year-old took over the role in 2007 and went on to guide his nation to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

However, Slovenia's qualifying campaign for Euro 2012 didn't run as smoothly and they failed to make the play-offs, finishing fourth in their group behind Italy, Estonia and Serbia.

"Without a doubt, Matjaz Kek has been a good head coach and achieved excellent results with the national team," read a statement on Slovenian Football Association's website. "We're thankful to Kek for the successful job and are looking forward to future joint adventures."

Kek's successor is suspected to be named later this week.
