The French Football Federation have confirmed that Joey Barton will be forced to serve the remainder of his ban as a Marseille player.
Barton was banned by the Football Association for 12 games for his part in a number of incidents that occurred during the final-day draw between Queens Park Rangers and Manchester City in May.
However, the midfielder's move to Marseille last week will not affect the punishment because of a FIFA rule that states any ban given before a transfer will be carried to a player's new club.
A statement from the French authorities said: "Upon the transfer of Joey Barton from Queens Park Rangers to Olympique Marseille, the English Football Association transmitted to the French Football Federation the disciplinary sanction he was subject to in the English league."
Barton has nine games his ban left after missing QPR's first three league games.
