Schalke 04 president Clemens Tonnies has revealed that the club are negotiating to sign Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira.
The Germany World Cup winner will be available on a Bosman this summer when his contract expires.
It was reported last week that Manchester United were planning to use a £200,000-a-week salary to lure the 27-year-old to Old Trafford, but Tonnies says that he is thrashing out a deal with Schalke.
"I have a high opinion of Sami Khedira because he's a leader who can improve the team," he told Sport1.
"He has an incredible reputation with the national team. We've spoken [to Khedira] several times.
"Now, Horst Heldt (Schalke's sporting director) and Khedira's agent must find a satisfactory solution."
Khedira has made 11 La Liga appearances for the Blancos in an injury-ravaged season.
