Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill says that James McFadden should put pen to paper on a short-term deal at the club within the next 24 hours.

Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill has confirmed that James McFadden should complete a deal with the club within the next 24 hours.

The former Everton winger has been linked with the North East outfit in recent months after becoming a free agent in the summer.

"With a little bit of luck, he is going to sign this afternoon, certainly by the latest, tomorrow," said O'Neill.

The 29-year-old is reportedly due to secure a three-month deal at the Stadium of Light.
