The first clear opportunity of the game fell to Slovenia in the 13th minute, but they missed the chance to take the lead when Andraz Kirm struck his effort over the crossbar from close range after good work from Jasmin Kurtic.
Uruguay started to show more urgency midway through the first half, with Maxi Pereira striking the post with a thunderous strike from the corner of the box.
As the pressure began to grow, Slovenia conceded the opening goal of the game in the 37th minute when Cavani took full advantage from some space in the area to nod home Diego Forlan's delivery.
The same combination should have produced Uruguay's second goal in the early stages of the second half, but Cavani could only hit a shot wide following more clever play from Forlan.
Uruguay continued to search for more goals late on in the game, with Christian Stuani's acrobatic effort being pushed over the crossbar by Samir Handanovic.
Stuani wasn't to be denied a second time, as he completed the scoring in the 77th minute by tapping home from close range after Handanovic had been beaten to the ball by Cavani.
