Roberto Martinez is expecting Newcastle United to soon improve on their league position.

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has insisted that Newcastle United's position in the Premier League is not reflective of their ability.

Newcastle, who host Wigan on Monday night, are currently 14th in the Premier League after a slow start to the season.

However Martinez has said that their league position is false and is expecting a very tough game.

"We need to remember that Newcastle are capable of reaching really good heights of performance and results," Sky Sports News quotes Martinez as saying.

"Remember what they achieved last season in finishing fifth. [It] was a phenomenal achievement, and it's going to be a very difficult game.

"Sometimes in this league you can get in a run of bad results but we're going to expect Newcastle to perform very well and make it difficult."

Wigan are a place below Newcastle on goal difference.
