Doncaster Rovers confirm that manager Dean Saunders has been given permission to speak to Wolverhampton Wanderers following the sacking of Stale Solbakken.

Doncaster Rovers manager Dean Saunders has been given permission to speak to Wolverhampton Wanderers over their vacant manager's post.

Wolves sacked former boss Stale Solbakken following yesterday's FA Cup defeat to non-league Luton Town, with Saunders quickly emerging as the favourite for the job.

Rovers confirmed that Wolves had made a formal approach for Saunders and that he had permission to speak to the Championship club, but assured their fans that they would try to keep the former Wales international at the Keepmoat Stadium.

"Doncaster Rovers can confirm that they received an official approach from Wolves this morning to speak to Dean Saunders regarding their vacant position," read a club statement.

"The Rovers board will not stand in the way of Dean but will try to keep him at Rovers. Dean has been given permission to speak to Wolves and he is meeting them today.

"The board have a strategy for a situation such as this and have a 'Plan B' in place. We will keep everyone updated as we find out more."

Wolves currently sit 18th in the Championship table, while Doncaster are second in League One.
