Leicester Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill has confirmed that Geordan Murphy has joined the club as assistant backs coach.

Murphy, who retired at the end of the season after a 16-year career, will assist backs coach Paul Burke next season.

"Geordan obviously knows Leicester Tigers very well, he knows and understands the game at the very highest level and has a wealth of experience and knowledge to pass on to others," Cockerill told the club's official website.

"He has enjoyed a very successful and lengthy playing career and we believe he can become a top-class coach.

"By bringing Paul and Geordan together in the coaching team we have a degree of continuity which I feel is very important in our environment and we look forward to seeing their continued development in their new roles."

Leicester won 15 of their 22 league matches last season.
