Carla Suarez Navarro comes from behind to beat Venus Williams

Carla Suarez Navarro produces an excellent fightback to beat Venus Williams in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open.

Carla Suarez Navarro produced an impressive comeback to beat Venus Williams 0-6 6-1 7-5 in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open.

An unpredictable meeting started positively for Williams, who looked in fine form in the early stages as she kept rallies short and dictated the tempo from the back of the court.

Navarro appeared to have no answer to the 16th seed's fine start, and the first set was won by the former world number one as she used three breaks to ease into the lead.

However, the momentum shifted quickly early in the second set as a string of errors from Williams on serve allowed Navarro to race into a 4-0 advantage.

It was the 12th seed who continued to grow in confidence during the longer rallies as Williams struggled to put the pressure on the Spaniard, and another break of serve brought Navarro level.

A gripping match continued to offer dramatic twists in the decider as Williams allowed Suarez Navarro to break back on two occasions after creating openings.

The match looked set to be heading into a tie-break as the third set continued on serve until the 12th game, but errors from Williams opened the door for Suarez Navarro, who converted match point at the first attempt to reach the last four.
