Eugenie Bouchard seals place in fourth round

Seventh seed Eugenie Bouchard earns her place in the fourth round of the US Open with a hard-fought victory over Barbora Zahlavova Strycova at Flushing Meadows.

Seventh seed Eugenie Bouchard secured her place in the fourth round of the US Open with victory Barbora Zahlavova Strycova in three sets on Sunday.

The 20-year-old began the match in confident fashion and managed to earn three breaks of serve to take the first set 6-2.

Strycova fought back in the second to keep her tournament hopes alive as each player secured two breaks to take it into a tie-breaker and the 28-year-old Czech managed to take the match into a decider with a 7-2 victory.

Bouchard responded to the pressure from her opponent and put herself in a match-winning position with a break, but Strycova hit back immediately to tie the scores at 4-4.

However, the 20-year-old Canadian upped her game in the final stages to earn a three-set win, and she will now play 17th seed Ekaterian Makarova in the fourth round of the tournament.
