Massimo Donati broke free for Palermo on 11 minutes, but his finish was wide of the mark.

Diego Fabbrini then came close for the home side, though his effort was way off target.

Debutant Mauro Boselli then drove forward and almost grabbed the opener for Palermo, but his shot went just wide of the post.

Facundo Parra had Atalanta's first real opportunity just before half time, but his effort was saved well by the goalkeeper.

The away side took the lead on 54 minutes through a well-placed header from Carlos Carmona.

Atalanta then doubled their advantage on 71 minutes through a fine finish from Denis. Nelson gave Palermo hope when he made it 2-1 on 84 minutes.

The home side, though, could not find a late equaliser and Atalanta took all three points.
